Quick Questions with Rebecca: Senior Cloud Developer

Rebecca is a key cog in the SwipedOn dev machine and self-proclaimed nerd. When they don’t have their head in the Cloud (see what we did there), Rebecca loves to nourish their soul spending time with the people dearest to them, learning new skills and sipping on their morning coffee. We caught up with Rebecca to find out what a day in the life is like for them at SwipedOn!

In a nutshell, what do you do at SwipedOn?

The biggest part of my mahi is writing code, but I'm also involved in planning and in supporting my colleagues in their work. There are a few areas of the product that I have a level of ownership in but the biggest is billing, and I am proud to be someone that people can turn to me when they need my expert knowledge in that area.

What does a day in the life of you at SwipedOn look like?

The first and most important step to starting my day is coffee, the elixir of modern life. The next step is orientation, checking Slack, glancing at my email inbox, having a look at my calendar to see what my day looks like, seeing if I left myself any notes, and having a look at what I was working on yesterday, anything I need to do to get some idea of what the day holds and where everything is at. Then I get into the code, planning or whatever the day holds. The best thing about software development is that every day brings a unique challenge to tackle.

What are some of your favourite parts about being part of the team here?

I have seen this team grow from a small scrappy startup taking on the world into a formidable force. I love the growth I have seen in my team members and in myself. An important quality of an effective team to bring out the best of each other and I think we do that.

What do you particularly like about what we’re doing with SwipedOn?

First impressions are everything and I love that our customers are willing to trust us with that. Whether it is our invitation emails, our sign in app, or another point of contact, our system is a part of welcoming people into a space and that is so important.

What three words would you use to describe your role?

1. Plan
2. Execute
3. Support

Do you have a favourite motto or mantra that you live by?

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Life has proven to me that if you keep taking steps towards where you want to be, you'll be amazed at what you can achieve.

What did you do in your previous working life?

I've been working at SwipedOn since 2017, which feels like a lifetime ago. I was creating boutique e-commerce web-applications and building web-based solutions for businesses. This provided a solid foundation for what I do today. I highly recommend that anyone starting out as a Software Developer do something similar because you start out with a wide range of problems, have to extract requirements from people who don't necessarily know how to voice what they need and have to explain technical concepts to non-technical people.

What do you do in your free time?

I have an incredible group of friends who I love and cherish, I have an amazing partner, and I have some beautiful pets. I like to nourish my soul by spending time with them or nourish my mind by learning new skills.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?

I have no ambitions to jump out of a plane or travel or anything. I just want to live a happy life with people I love.

What’s on your SwipedOn playlist? 🎧

I love that we have access to a seemingly infinite supply of music at the tap of a finger. I love exploring music styles from all over the world.

If you were stuck on a desert island and you could choose one person from the SwipedOn team to come with you, who would you take and why?

Zeke (our resident canine friend 🐶) I'd feel bad about taking him away from Vanessa but he would be an amazing companion. He could alert me of predators, provide me with warmth on cold nights, and bark at any ships or rescue teams. 🚢  🏝️

Let’s end this with a weird fact about you…

Butterflies have taste receptors on their feet 🦋 🤯
