Quick Questions with Rebecca: Cloud Developer

Rebecca (aka Bex) is a key cog in the SwipedOn dev machine and self-proclaimed nerd. When she doesn’t have her head in the cloud, Bex loves artistic roller skating, spending time with her dog and tinkering with her personal technology. We caught up with Bex to find out what a day in the life is like for her at SwipedOn!

What does a day in the life of you at SwipedOn look like?

🐶 First thing I do when I wake up is say good morning to my dog, it's important to me to start the day with the unconditional love that only a dog can provide.
☕️ As soon as I arrive at the office I set up my workstation and grab a coffee.
👩🏻‍💻 At that point I am ready for whatever the day has in store for me! It might be writing code, helping others or planning how to create new features.

What do you like about working at SwipedOn?

Community would have to be the number one thing, we have an incredible group of people working at SwipedOn. We spend so much of our lives at work that our colleagues can become like a second family.

What do you particularly like about what we’re doing with SwipedOn?

My first impression of SwipedOn was as a visitor. I was a starry eyed developer moving into a co-working space it seemed futuristic and really helped me get excited about working there. What we are creating here at SwipedOn are is positive experiences for people and I think that can make a difference in people's lives. As a member of a gender minority, I don't always have the best experience interacting with businesses and when I do have a great experience that means a lot. So playing a part in helping business make that interaction a good one is fantastic.

What three words would you use to describe your role?

1. Code
2. Help
3. Others

What is your SwipedOn screensaver?

As a developer I have so many SwipedOn accounts so I normally just keep the defaults and thankfully they are amazing.

What did you do in your previous working life?

I was creating boutique e-commerce web-applications and building web-based solutions for businesses.

What do you do in your free time?

I believe play, creation and learning are what makes life worth living. I love to do artistic roller skating, it is a fun way to connect with my physical form since, as a developer, we spend so much time in our mind. I also love tinkering with my personal technology, for example, I have an ever evolving home automation system. I also love to consume media that helps me expand my world view.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?

1. Compete in a roller skating competition.
2. Teach trans people to code. Not only is it important to have all types of people designing the systems that govern our lives, a career in STEM is incredibly impactful for people who statistically end up in poverty.
3. Pat all the dogs.

What’s on your SwipedOn playlist?

I like to explore a wide variety of music from all over the world. We live in an age where access to cultural expression from all walks of life is just a tap of a screen away. I like to make the most of that.

If you were stuck on a desert island and you could choose one person from the SwipedOn team to come with you, who would you take and why?

How could I do that to someone?! I guess if I absolutely had to it would be Rory since he likes to hike.

Let’s end this with a weird fact about you…

I can't think of one 😆
